Working With David Yu Bush bar

I have been apprenticing with David Yu, alongside 3 other students, since May (?). David's secondary trade is bartending, so we were working with him trying to capture the social demographic of the city, through the different bars/venues. Having been brought up around dundee, and knowing the different reputations and social make ups of the venues, it was interesting to help David out, and see an outsiders unbiased perspective on each bar, the people within and the 'buzz' in each. Also having lived in the area, but only having been in one of the venues previous to filming, it was good to see the reality behind the reputations.

Bush bar

This was the first venue we shot in. I think David shot most of it on his own. Its such a small intimate space that when there were two of us with cameras, it was slightly more conspicuous and there was a risk of intimidating people, and unbalancing the demo/feel of the pub.

Shooting here was really interesting, because of its very local, regular clientele. I felt that the pubs buzz was closer to that of the house party than any of the other pubs/bars. Because everyone was so comfortable (in each others company, as well as belting out karaoke tunes), and knew each other in this really small (Possibly the same size as the flat) venue, it was interesting to see/ speak to people inside. It was also quite good seeing how David talked to everyone and got the footage he needed without imposing himself on anyone, and putting anyone out.

Last time round

The last week of the doodle project with Ben went very well. Was great to see how far everyone had come on, with new members too on the last day they picked up things very quickly. With a new teacher, Scott, and new doodles a large variety of work was created.

The variety of stuff produced was great to see, some stuff very simple and comical, whereas Ash went for a more delicate floral print, which in the end turned out superb. It was great to see how everyone loved being so freely creative in their work, which is something that i admired about the project. Allowing everyone to work at their own pace, and to their own ability.

La La La

Soooo finally figuring out how to post things on here, few weeks to late but it's better than never! Been working with Ben and his collegues for about 7 weeks throughout August on a doodle project. We worked on Screen printing in the DCA trying to develop pieces of work from the doodles that Ben's collegues had drawn whilst working in the Bank of Scotland.

In the first 3 weeks it was great to see the variety of doodles coming from everyone. From Carols simple faces to Ash's delicate patterns. Claire ran through the process with everyone, from coating the screens with photographic emulsion to exposing the doodle images to the UV light.

Carol, very enthusiastic about learning the process, and considered taking up future classes in the DCA. It was good to see how aware it made people of the fantastic facilities in the DCA and what can be created, while having fun at the same time. Many of the prints made are being considered for an exhibition thats going to be put on in the Bank and hopefully other call centres.
